ARUA district will receive about $10.5m (sh21b) under the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) to support community development initiatives.

During the district technical planning meeting last Thursday, the NUSAF district technical officer, Judith Ruko, said the money would benefit 862,000 people.

Ruko said the five-year workplan was under the poverty eradication programme funded by the World Bank.

She said the programme aimed at helping 18 northern districts to enable them “catch up” with the rest of the country.

Ruko said sh16b would go into community development initiatives, sh4b into supporting vulnerable groups like women and children and about sh45m into community reconciliation programmes.

She said four of the six project proposals submitted by the district had been approved and an agreement was due for signing.

Ruko said the funds would be released directly to the beneficiaries.

She said the money would be released in installments of 50%, 35% and 15% after proper accountability.
