AJAZ Karim, the National Council of Sports (NCS) coordinator in UK, has appealed to government to stop taxing second-hand sports equipment that come in the country as charity.
Karim, also chairman of the UK based Uganda Charity Trust Fund (UCTF), handed over second hand sports gear worth £3000 to NCS acting general secretary John Odyek at his Lugogo office yesterday.
“We wish to enhance the development of sports in Uganda by soliciting for equipment from abroad. Unfortunately, the taxes levied on such second hand equipment are too high and we appeal to the government to scrap them,” said Karim, who was flanked by Nicky Grendon.
Karim revealed that despite the abundant talent in Uganda, the local sportsmen lack personal equipment which has greatly curtailed excellent performance in various sports disciplines.
The consignment, handed to Odyek, included cricket bats, pads, headgears, tennis rackets, balls and strings, squash rackets and kit bags.
“NCS is proud of UCTF for the continuous efforts to boost the growth of sports in this country. We promise to continue putting to good use all the equipment and to distribute it evenly to the growing schools and clubs,” said Odyek, who was flanked by NCS vice chairman Jasper Aligawesa. Ends
