Business in Arua Municipal Council came to a standstill on Monday when bailiffs stormed the council offices and attached property worth sh500m.

The bailiffs, escorted by the Police, impounded property which included three lorries, a tractor and furniture from the Town Clerk’s office.

The auctioneers were executing a warrant to collect and recover sh91,985,251 owed to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for failure to pay VAT and another sh9,633,208 as income tax.

URA commissioner Feddy Mwerinde issued the warrant.

Sources in the council said the municipal lawyers, Ayume and Jogo Advocates, refused to intervene because the council owed them over sh33m in arrears.

The council is also threatened by a further confiscation of its three garbage trucks by the revenue body.
