THE Government should devise means of developing wetlands in the country, Kampala Mayor John Ssebaana Kizito has said.

Speaking at the launch of the Kisenyi Slum-Upgrading Project recently, Ssebaana said apart from the seven hills, the rest of the city was in wetlands.

“The issue of wetland is wider. It involves the concept of where Kampala is located.

The Government should devise means developing wetlands with a view of retaining the advantages of wetlands,” he said.

“Kibimba rice project is in a wetland. The entire river has been taken up.

The minister just gives orders to demolish houses in wetlands. How many houses will you demolish when most of the structures are in wetlands?” Ssebaana asked.

He said the Government should gazzette wetlands so that Ugandans know the wetland demarcations.

“Kisenyi is Kampala’s biggest slum. It has a population of about 80,000 people. It comprises three parishes which require upgrading.

The slum will get storied houses when implementation of the project is complete,” Ssebaana said.

The mayor said the Ministry of Water, Lands and Environment should concentrate on the country side where there is more land than in Kampala.
