THE Sembabule LC5 chairperson, Herman Ssentongo, has called on the Government to help in the development of Bigobyamugenyi into a strong tourist centre.

“Poor as Sembabule is, it is endowed with an interesting and undeveloped historic site that would fetch a lot of money. In this regard the Government and individuals should come out and support its development,” he said in a news conference at the district headquarters recently.

Ssentongo said Bigobyamugenyi was of great tourist, educational and research significance.

“If this place gets the standards it deserves, things like hotels and roads linking there, recreational joints would be established by the district and individuals to exploit the various economic benefits from the centre,” he said.

Ssentongo said the archeological site was the second largest historic site in East and Southern Africa after the Great Zimbabwe.

“In the programme to conserve wild life and antiquities, Sembabule site should get the first priority.

It needs urgent attention if it’s to be of any economic importance to the local people, the district and the country at large. We shouldn’t lose out on this natural gift,” he said.

Located at Ntuusi in Mawogola county, Bigobyamugenyi was constructed by the legendary Bachwezi demi-god rulers of the Great Lakes around 1200 AD.

It has a magnificent scenery, human and animal artifacts and other archeological items.
