<b>Pupil dead</b><br>NEBBI — One pupil died and seven others were seriously injured recently when a Dyna truck reg 632 UBD in which they were travelling in lost control on a hill at Namrwodho bridge on Pakwach-Nebbi road.

NEBBI — One pupil died and seven others were seriously injured recently when a Dyna truck reg 632 UBD in which they were travelling in lost control on a hill at Namrwodho bridge on Pakwach-Nebbi road. District traffic officer David Owiny blamed overloading for the accident. He identified the dead pupil as Simon Okumu of Ossi Primary School.

20 transferred
APAC — The education officer has transferred 20 secondary school headteachers and three deputy headteachers to improve the academic standards in the district. Billy Okunyo recently said 66 teachers had also been transferred to various schools. Chief administrative officer Faustin Olwitingol said most of the transfers had been on request and others recommended by the school management committees.

URCS gives
GULU — The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has received funds from African Child Initiative to give scholastic materials to 1,000 orphans and vulnerable children in the district. The URCS branch field coordinator, Terence Omonya, recently distributed the first batch of materials worth over sh15m to 400 orphans from 24 primary schools in Layibi division. The items included school bags, 3,200 ball pens, 9,600 exercise books, mathematical sets, pencils and school uniforms.


RDC decries
PADER — The Resident District Commissioner, Ahmed Awongo, has decried irregularities and corruption in the tender board. Awongo recently said some newly constructed structures had collapsed while others had developed cracks and leaking roofs due to shoddy workmanship. He accused technical officers of evaluating their own tenders through rubber stamp board members. He said the exclusion of board members from the evaluation stage had created more room for demand of bribes from contractors.
