MEMBERS of Parliament were shocked to find trainee teachers in Paidha sleeping on the floors of their mud and wattle houses.
The members of the committee of social services also expressed concern about the congestion in the male students’ halls of Paidha Primary Teachers College.
The MPs were giving a report on their recent visit to schools, teacher training colleges and nursing training schools in the West Nile.
“The boys sleep on the floor in a mud and wattle building. You wonder whether someone trained under such conditions can impart knowledge,” Avitus Tibarimbasa ( Ndorwa East) said.
He said the matter needed urgent attention.
“The products of some of these teachers’ colleges leave a lot to be desired,” committee chairperson Dorothy Hyuha said.
“We need better conditions in order for better quality teachers to be produced in our colleges,” she said.
The team, led by Herbert Lwanga (Bukoto South) said the head teacher of Yumbe Secondary School lacked accountability for sh15m released to the school.
At Muni National Teachers College in Arua, the committee reported poor sanitation and dilapidated pit latrines and bathrooms.
They expressed concern that a generator given in July 2000 had not been installed to date. They said the cost of installation had been put at sh25m.
At Kuluva School of Nursing and Arua Comprehensive Nursing Training School, the committee found that the intake was too high.
This had led to congetion and decline in the quality of training.
