NEBBI district has registered a steady increase in the number of deliveries at health units, the district director for health services, Dr. Sam Orach, said.

“In 1999-2000, the number of deliveries in health centres was at 18% and currently we stand at 35% which is a good indicator compared to the national average of 36%,” Orach said recently.

He said this recently at the commissioning of four maternity ambulances at the district headquarters.

The ambulances were donated by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).

Orach said the maternity mortality rate was still high in the district at 540 per 100,000 live births.

“The strategy now is to improve referral, equip health units and to employ and train more staff,” he said.

Orach said the district had constructed maternity wards nearer to the people.

He said they wrote to the Ministry of health requesting for DANIDA funds to equip the facilities.

Orach said the district would receive walk talkies and radio calls from UNFPA and the Strategic Support to Health Sector Strategic Plan project to be used by communities to call health units in case of emergencies.

The district chairman, Esrom Alenyo, warned against misuse of the ambulances and advised beneficiaries to effectively utilise them.
