NKUMBA-MARINES, one of the favourites to clinch this year’s men division one league crown after success in 2001, picked up their first win beating Sadolin Power 84-75 on Tuesday.

Marines rallied behind their go-to-guy and all-rounder Norman Blick — who literally walked over the Power defence — as the Marines went on to occupy third place behind Charging Rhinos.

Blick, who inspired the Marines to winning their curtain raiser title at the MUK Open at the start of the season with a victory over the Rhinos, had the hot hands for the Marines with 47 points as Karl Mugalu added 14 for the team.

Norman Blick now holds the 2004 league top scoring record with 47 points, 13 more than Steven Okias’ 34 points which the Warriors’ small forward nailed during their first game against Livingstone.

Wilbrod Oketcho and team-mate David Kiberu, who banked 25 and 22 points respectively for Power, also went on to occupy third and fourth places on the top scorers table.

The derby between Makerere University (MUK) and newcomers Earthquakes saw the latter establish a shocking but convincing 71-51 walloping of the MUK team.

Paul Ochola put up a commendable performance for the new entrants to finish with a game-high 25 points.
Timothy Byaruhanga and Musa Kaggwe led MUK with 13 points apiece.

Meanwhile, other newcomers Uganda Christian University Mukono, were walked over by their opponents Makerere Youth Heaters after they failed to show up for their first game at YMCA.
