BEE-keepers have asked the Government for support in order to increase the country’s export revenues.

The chairperson of the Uganda National Apiculture Development Organisation (TUNADO), Maria Odido, said this in an interview at their offices at Kampala Casino on Wednesday.

Odido said the Government could give loans to organised bee farmers, set up a honey processing plant and put bee keeping (apiculture) on the national budget.

“This would help uplift people’s economic standards and contribute to the country’s export revenue,” she said.

Odido said the absence of apiculture on the national budget was an indication that the sector was forgotten.

She there was need for a modern processing plant to improve the quality of honey, to the international market standards.

She said countries like Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Algeria, Egypt and Ethiopia have done a lot in apiculture.

If we get fixed somewhere in the budget, we would know that the government is doing something and being part of it is a symbol of concern by the top authority because budget means money allocation,” she said.
