A FAMILY in Iganga has sued the Attorney General, saying their relative was tortured to death by the Violent Crime Crack Unit (VCCU) operatives.

The complaint lodged by Hajji Juma Bwagu and Zubairi Mutesa, the deceased’s brother and father, was registered at the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) in Jinja.

They alleged that Edrisa Omulago was arrested on October 23, 2002 by VCCU (formerly Operation Wembley) operatives on allegations of illegal possession of a firearm.

Omulago was taken to Jinja Central Police Station and later transferred to Nalufenya where he died.

They said Omulago was undressed and beaten using rubber tubes and wires while in detention.

Dr. Ahimbisibwe of Jinja Hospital, who examined the body, told a tribunal chaired by UHRC commissioner Veronica Eragu that the body had bruises and stripes, which could have been caused by severe beatings.

He said Omulago could have sustained internal bleeding, leading to his death.
