BUSIA LC5 chairman Stephen Wanyama Oundo has ordered the suspended district service commission to resume work, saying the district was too poor to hire consultants to carry out its services.

During a heated district council meeting at Busia Social Hall, councillors moved a motion to suspend the entire district service commission, headed by Paul Egale, sighting corruption, incompetence, bribery and abuse of office by the commission.

Tabling the motion, Dabani sub-county councillor Wegulo Nafutali noted that Egale’s commission wrongly appointed Joel Wanjala as senior secretary of the tender board.

This was after they allegedly received a bribe of sh2m from Wanjala to appoint him though he lacked proper qualifications for the job.

The councillors had ordered the chief administrative officer, Charles Okello, to stop transacting any district business with the district service commission.

In case of any urgent service, Okello was advised to hire services from neighbouring districts like Tororo, Mbale and Jinja.

Wanyama said Busia was a poor district and all civil servants including himself could be corrupted and exposed to bribes.

“We cant hire services from neighbours after failing to put our own commission right. The commission is able to do its work and I have ordered them to go back to office,” he said.
