PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni yesterday warned public academic institutions against the use of strikes as a way of expressing their grievances.
“The Government is committed to ensuring that university workers are paid a satisfactory wage. In any case of dissatisfaction, to encourage the University Council to engage in dialogue with the staff.

“Work together to ensure a win-win situation. I do not encourage strikes in new and upcoming universities. There is a lot of room for negotiation and I encourage you to utilise that,” the President said in a speech read by Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi at the Kyambogo University graduation ceremony.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lutalo Bbosa, awarded the degrees.
The President’s warning comes after Makerere University academic staff laid down their tools protesting low pay.
The President said Kyambogo University was established to develop science, technology and teacher education.

“Kyambogo Unive-rsity should produce technologists, engineers and scientists with a practical orientation, teachers with competence and commitment and dedicated rehabilitation workers,” Museveni said.
He added, “We expect technologists who will transform our industrial sector and teaching and rehabilitation workers ready to take up the challenges UPE and effects of the LRA terrorism.”
