CHANGES aimed at restoring the image of the Northern Corridor Highway between Mombasa and Kampala are underway, the Kenyan roads minister, Raila Odinga, has said.
During a two-day International Finance Commission conference in Nairobi recently, Odinga said Ksh100b was required for rehabilitation of the road network and an annual Ksh10b for maintenance.
He said other changes would entail constructing a southern bypass road that would ensure drivers destined for Uganda and western Kenya do not pass through Nairobi.
Odinga said roads concessioning for Mombasa to Machakos turn-off, to Rironi, Busia, Malaba via Kisumu and Eldoret respectively, were viable areas for investment.
He said the World Bank had injected $260m towards phase one of the project which entailed rehabilitating the roads.
Odinga said phase two needed private sector participation.
