THE Madhvani Group of Companies has urged politicians to ensure that the economy does not decline as Uganda moves towards pluralism.
The senior member of the Madhvani family in Uganda, Manubhai Madhvani, said this at the launch of Muljibhai Madhvani Foundation at Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala on Thursday.
At the function, the Muljibhai Madhvani Foundation, a charitable trust, awarded scholarships to 44 students at various institutions of higher learning.
Manubhai asked politicians to ensure that Uganda progresses.
The group contributes 7 to 8 percent of the Gross Domestic Product.
The Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, represented the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, at the launching attended by several ministers, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga and the Attorney General, Francis Ayume.
The Foundation owns a commercial cum residential property on Plot 12/20 Jinja Road, Kampala whose net income from rent is used to give scholarships and grants to qualified Ugandans to acquire Bachelors and Masters degrees in scientific and technical education.
The chairman of the management committee, S. B. Rutega, said sh300m should be for scholarships this academic year.
He asked the Government to consider giving tax exemption to buildings so that all rental income goes to scholarships and grants to the needy students. He called for the long awaited employment policy.
Bukenya said the Foundation was a great initiative, which must receive the full support from the Government.
He said the scholarships enhance the President’s vision of creating an educated middle class as the engine of development
He said the Government believes in export oriented private sector driven development and recognises the role of the Mudhvani Group.
