UGANDA will today mark the international day of the family.

“The international day of families gives us an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families as basic units of society, as well as promoting appropriate action,” gender minister Zoe Bakoko Bakoru said on Thursday.

She told the Govern-ment weekly press briefing that the objectives of the day included advocating opportunities for family members to understand and meet their moral, social and legal responsibilities,
It also involves advocating mutual respect, tolerance and co-operation in the family and society and equal partnership between men and women in families.

Beat Bisangwa from the Office of the First Lady, said this week has been declared the week of families.

A public dialogue will be held this afternoon at the international Conference Centre to be followed by a dinner at the Nile Gardens.

She said issues to discuss at the dialogue include whether gay couples should be regarded as family, family values and its relevance to development of the country.
