THE United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has warned of the danger posed by the HIV/AIDS scourge and a population explosion inspite of the continent’s progress in good governance and economic management.
Speaking at the opening of the African finance ministers conference at Speke Resort Munyonyo, on Saturday, the ECA chief, K. Y. Amoako, said 13 million Africans had died of HIV/AIDS and 28 million were living with the virus.
He said the pandemic threatened economic growth, human resources and agricultural productivity.
Amoako said the UN was striving to help Africa deal with the pandemic.
He warned the rate of population growth had outstripped Africa’s economic growth, saying the number of poor people would rise from 315 million in 1999 to 404 million people by 2015.
