Arua and Lira donate blood

THE regional Blood Bank director, Dr. Sam Uringtho, has said 1,305 units of blood were donated during the international week of Red Cross. Uringtho said the IRC week was launched in Lira and Arua from May 3 to 8. He said donors in Lira donated 625 units, while those in Arua donated 680. “Similar exercises were going on in several regions,” he said.
He said the open-air donation was successful although the rain prevented some people from turning up for the donations.

Carbonated drinks risky

CARBONATED drinks may raise the risk of esophageal cancer, a usually fatal disease, researchers reported on Monday.

Mukono gets health centre


THE World Vision has handed over a sh98m health centre to residents of Ssi sub-county in Mukono district. The centre will deal in first aid services and dispensing drugs especially for minor and major ailments in Ssi. Commissioning the block, the district chairman, Godfrey Ddamulira called upon the residents to handle the facilities as their own property and report destructive people likely to vandalise the equipment. “How long it benefits you will depend entirely on how well you handle and utilise the gadgets,” he said.

Anti-depressant withdrawn

Bristol-Myers Squibb said on Wednesday it would no longer make or sell its antidepressant Serzone, which has been linked to life-threatening liver problems. A company spokesman said the drug, already withdrawn in major markets such as Europe and Canada, was being discontinued worldwide, including in the United States, due to poor sales. The drug is also being withdrawn in Australia and New Zealand.
