Kigezi High School Old Students Association (KHOSA) has launched a scholarship fund to benefit two Advanced level students yearly.
Tycoon, Sudhir Ruparelia gave sh5m towards the fund and several other old students have contributed to the purchasing of computers and the scholarship fund.
David Bahati, the association’s patron, says they will mobilise funds for the school from old students and well wishers.
Last month, a team of old students visited the school. There was jubilation when they gave 11 computers to boost the computer lab. They said the scholarship fund would be increased to accommodate more needy students.
Kigezi High School has produced prominent politicians and successful academicians including Defence Minister Amama Mbabazi, Health Minister Jim Muhwezi, Hope Mwesigye, Bank of Uganda governor, Tumusiime Mutebile, Canon Batuma, some of the richest businessmen in Uganda among others.
In the 70s and the 80s, Kigezi High School was one of the most outstanding schools in the country. A combination of strikes and poor administration have led to its decline.
Bahati says it is the duty of the old students to restore the glory of the school.
“We believe that poor students must be supported so they can achieve their dreams. We shall embark on a programme to raise money for poor students who are bright but are not able to continue with their studies after Ordinary level,” Bahati says.
He acknowledged the role of information communication technology in education and urged the school authorities to address the issue of indiscipline, which caused strikes at the school.
The Bishop of Kigezi Diocese, George Katwesigye, thanked the old students for the initiative to support the school.
The function attracted over 200 old students.
