SEVEN out of 11 top officials of Mayuge district grilled by detectives yesterday were detained as the Police probed the disappearance of sh2.8b from the district coffers, reports Steven Candia.

The officials were spirited away from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) offices at 6:30pm on a Police double-cabin truck to the Central Police Station where they were locked up.
Dunstan Balaba, the Chief Administrative Officer, chief finance officer James Kisita, internal auditor Sulaiman Nantabya, district engineer Fabian Wanjusi, works supervisor Fred Musenero, speaker Zakaya Nzaireki and Moses Waikoba were locked up after being interrogated for over five hours.

The secretary to the tender board, Daniel Kasala, the storeman only identified as Batabaire and the district planner, Majidu Nyede, were set free.
A probe commissioned by the CID director, Elizabeth Kutesa, said the money disappeared between 2000-2003.

The findings show that sh300m was lost in the 2000/2001 financial year, sh1.9b in 2001/2002 and sh649m in 2002/2003.
The Auditor General also reported loss of colossal sums of money meant for social services in Mayuge.
