PROFESSOR John Ssebuwufu yesterday handed over to professor Livingstone Sserwada Luboobi as the vice-chancellor of Makerere University
PROFESSOR John Ssebuwufu yesterday handed over to professor Livingstone Sserwada Luboobi as the vice-chancellor of Makerere University, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwe.
The ceremony was presided over by the university council chairman, Gabriel Opio and chairman of the vice-chancellor search committee John Ntimba.
Opio said, “I am glad that we have witnessed a peaceful transition after a slow but successful process. It was not an easy one.
At times we have to say objective words to one another but eventually we reached a compromise. The appointment of Prof. Luboobi is in accordance with the new Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001,†he said. “And I hereby declare him the new head of the university.â€
Ssebuwufu, 56, who has served as the university’s head for about 11 years, said he declined requests by friends to stay for another term of office.
Luboobi, 59, appealed to the deans and directors to be cooperative. “I cannot do all the work alone. I need your support and cooperation. We need to manage our time, we should not call for a meeting then wait for one hour to raise the quorum. It is very frustrating,†he said.
