Seven Mayuge district officials who were on Monday arrested by the Police have been charged and remanded by Iganga Chief Magistrate David Kidyanga.

Chief administrative officer Dunstan Balaba, chief finance officer James Kisita, internal auditor Sulaiman Nantyaba, district engineer Fabian Wanjusi, district education officer Stephen Kyakwise and works supervisor Fred Musenero were charged on 11 counts of causing financial loss, abuse of office, theft and embezzlement of public funds.

District speaker Zakia Nzaireki was charged with misuse of office to influence tender awards.

The seven, represented by lawyers Robert Okalang, Ivan Mangeni, Kibuka Mubiru and Ndadwa, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Court heard that on separate occasions, the seven, took advantage of their offices to defraud the district of colossal sums of money.

Resident state attorney Margaret Nakigudde said investigations were ongoing, making it difficult to establish the actual amount of money involved at the time.

However, the charge sheet implicated Balaba, Kisita, Nantyaba, Wanjusi and Musenero to have misused their offices to authorise payment of sh127m for the construction of a district administration block without authority of the district council during the 2001/02 financial year.

Kidyanga remanded the suspects until June 18.
