TEN MPs from Teso have petitioned the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, opposing the proposed date and venue for Arrow Group Day celebrations which were due to take place tomorrow in Soroti Municipality.

In a letter copied to Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi, speaker Edward Ssekandi and the Minister for the Presidency, Kirunda Kivejinja, the MPs argued that the best place to hold the celebrations should have been Obalanga.

They said it would be more meaningful to hold the celebrations in Obalanga because the first attack on Teso by the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels was in Obalanga on June 15, 2003.

“We strongly disagree with the form and venue of commemorating the Arrow Boys Day. Basing on requests from our people, we recommend that the commemoration be carried out in Obalanga and should be in form of a memorial service rather than celebrations,” the letter read.

Over the weekend, the organisers issued a statement postponing the celebrations because President Yoweri Museveni, who is supposed to be the chief guest, is still in America.

The MPs are Patrick Amuriat (Kumi), Francis Epetait (Ngora), Samuel Anyolo (Soroti), Mary Amajo (Kaberamaido), Ben Etonu (Amuria), Elijah Okupa (Kasilo), Isaiah Imumet (Usuk), Johnson Malinga (Kapelebyong), Martin Orech (Kalaki) and Alice Alaso (Soroti).

Amuriat, the chairman of Teso Parliamentary Group, told the press on Friday that the MPs would not attend the celebrations in Soroti Municipality.
