NATIONAL Council of Sports (NCS) has demanded a review of the activities of London based Uganda Charity Trust Fund (UCTF) because sports equipment they import is not worth 40 per cent of the taxes paid.

Jaz Karim coordinates the Charity fund that solicits for sports equipment for Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda national sports associations from abroad.

In a letter to the minister in charge of sports Henry Okello Oryem on June 11, acting general secretary Jasper Aligawesa said that Jaz Karim, named NCS coordinator abroad three years ago, was giving the associations “a raw deal.”

Aligawesa was so upset, that he threw around a variety of old sneakers, boots, jerseys, tennis equipment and footballs at his oofice at Lugogo.

“Majority of the goods are far from ‘second hand’ status’, he said. Aligawesa said that Karim’s consignments caused the council big financial losses in taxes to Uganda Revenue Authority.

“Jaz Karim’s consignments cost National Council of Sports colossal sums of money in URA taxes yet after clearing them, the goods are not worth 40 per cent of the taxes. Such a fund does not make any economic sense,” Aligawesa said in the letter to the minister.

Adding, “you only get one or two pieces of European club jerseys of different colours or make, or, a bottom without the top or vice versa. Of what use should we put on such isolated rugs?”
Karim refused to comment on the accusations and referred the reporter to Aligawesa.
