UGANDA’s plans for the Euro/Africa Group IV Davis Cup is in the balance as Uganda Tennis Association (UTA) is short of sh20m to see them participate in the prestigious tournament in Moldova this month.
“The association is still short of sh20m for tickets and allowances for players and coaches,” Cedric Babu, UTA secretary told The New Vision.

“We are working hand in hand with the National Council of Sports (NCS) together with the sports ministry to raise the funds to see us participate in the Davis Cup.”
The association has raised sh30m and are left with a balance to clear tickets and allowances.

Uganda made its debut at the all-male tennis tournament seven year’s ago in Gaborone, Botswana and has since never missed any edition although they have never advanced to the Group III stage.
The five-man team is made up of national top seed Godfrey Uzunga, Charles Yokwe, James Odongo, Patrick Olobo, and Cedric Babu with John Oduke and John Kasule as coaches.

Uganda is drawn in the Group IV with Armenia, Bosnia, Botswana, Malta, Mauritius, Rwanda and hosts Moldova.
The nations in the group will play a round-robin format in two groups with the best two advancing to Group III next year.
The tournament will be held July 12-18.

The team will this Saturday play exhibition games at Kabira Country Club in Bukoto from 3.00 pm. UTA urges tennis fans to come and watch the games which will be free of charges.
The team is scheduled to depart for Moldova next Friday.
