THE Carnegie Corporation of New York has given Makerere University a US$2m (about sh3.7b) grant to sponsor undergraduate women for three years.
The Carnegie Corporation was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote “the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding.”
The corporation initiated the sponsorship programme for women in 2001, to improve the capacity of the African universities to educate women to reduce inequality in their universities.
A statement from the corporation’s public affairs office said the scholarship was also extended to the University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, which received US$2m.
“We believe an investment in scholarships for women is an investment in the creation of knowledge for Africa,” the corporation’s president, Vartan Gregorian, said.
A total of 503 women have benefited from the scholarship at the two universities, out of which 353 are from Makerere and 150 from Dar-es-Salaam.
“The Makerere University female scholarship programme aims at increasing enrollment and retention of women undergraduates, especially in science and technology programmes. Science students cover 65% of the sponsorship,” read the statement.
“These grants are part of the corporation’s strategy to remove financial barriers to women’s participation in university education in Africa,” the corporation’s programme officer, Andrea Johnson, said in the statement.
The initiative gives priority to women from disadvantaged backgrounds and parts of Uganda that traditionally send few students to university.
The corporation also supports a national programme for women in South Africa and provides financial aid for female undergraduate programmes at three universities in Nigeria.
