UGANDA Chess Federation’s plans to popularise the game got a huge boost with an offer of modern equipment from Germany.
Holger Seubert, deputy head of mission at the Germany Embassy, handed over 50 chess boards, 30 clocks and five demonstration boards to the federation patron Jotham Tumwesigye on Tuesday.
The event was held at the Uganda-German Cultural Society offices in Ntinda.
The equipment is the type used in the German chess league, one of the strongest in the world.
UCF chairman Enock Barumba, senior players including national champion Stephen Kawuma were at the hand-over.
Seubert, an ardent chess player, hoped the equipment will intensify efforts to get more youngsters in the game.
“I hope this equipment will help to spread this game among the young people. They have shown a lot of interest,” Seubert said.
