UWA to start mock tourism
KAMPALA —The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is to open another group of habituated gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to tourists. The tourism development manager, said last week that UWA has been preparing them to get used to tourists under what he called ‘mockery tourism.’ Habituation is a process through which mountain gorillas get used to human beings without losing their wild characters. Gorilla tourism started in Uganda in the early 1990s and three groups are available at Buhoma in Bwindi.

Council to put up landfill
MUKONO – The town council has secured land at Katikolo village for construction of a landfill to check haphazard dumping of waste. Speaking recently to The New Vision, Jacqueline Mirembe, a district council official said the council has already acquired a new site, which will replace the dumping site that is over flowing at Ddandira village.

Forests under destruction
KAMPALA — Forests located in the Government reserves and outside the protected areas in Mpigi are under wanton destruction. Speaking recently, the district environment officer, Patience Nsereko told The New Vision that illegal felling of trees was widespread in the district. She said the malpractice was hard to control because of politicians interference.

Meeting over GMOs
KAMPALA —The Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment, (ACODE) organised a meeting on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) mid last month at Nile Resort in Jinja.
Speaking to The New Vision Arthur Mpeirwe of ACODE said the meeting shared experiences on the outcome of the Carterna Protocol, which came into force early this year. ACODE has been engaged in advocacy process at national level concerning GMOs and the formulation of guidelines on undertaking GMOs.
