The Iteso and Karimojong have resolved to avoid conflict and work together for peace and development in both regions, reports Joseph Orisa.

This was at a two- day retreat held at Lotome sub-county in Moroto district recently.

The retreat, facilitated by the Uganda Human Rights Commission, DANIDA and Karamoja Agro-pastoral Development Programme (KADP), attracted Karimojong youths from Moroto and Nakapiripirit districts and Iteso from the sub-counties of Usuk and Ngariam in Katakwi, which are constantly attacked by Karimojong warriors.

The Karimojong apologised to the Iteso for all the atrocities they had committed in Teso such as cattle rustling, and asked for forgiveness.

“We are deeply sorry for all the atrocities we have committed against you. We beg for forgiveness and promise not to offend you again, since we are like uncles and nephews,” Lokee Lopangiro, one of the warriors said.

Lokee said cattle rustling and insecurity in Karamoja and its neighbouring districts were persistent because the youth had not been involved in peace and conflict resolution activities.
