He was nominated in six of the most competitive categories for this year’s Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) awards but did not win any until the final two.

But for Jose Chameleone’s fans, it turned out a case of saving the best for last, as their star was announced the Artiste of the Year for the second year running.
The awards took place on Saturday at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

The singer, who is currently on tour in Tanzania was, however, not on hand to receive his award.
Chameleone also won the Song of the Year award for Jamila.

The function, which attracted thousands of music enthusiasts from all walks of life, was presided over by the Nnabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda.

Other dignitaries included cabinet ministers, heads of foreign missions, Police chief Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, corporate executives and MPs.

Property mogul Sudhir Ruparelia and wife Jyostna handed over a sh5m dummy cheque to Gerald and Prossy Mayanja, Chameleone’s parents, to rapturous applause and screams by fans both in the VIP and general sitting areas.

“Ladies and gentleman, I really don’t have much to say but to thank whoever voted for my son. But remember, next year, we need another kisanja (chance),” Mayanja said.

The Nnabagereka, who was flanked by Justice Julia Ssebutinde and Radio One proprietor Maria Kiwanuka, reminded local artistes of their social responsibility.

She urged them to unite for a stronger industry, appealed to FM stations to promote indigenous music and paid tribute to the late Elly Wamala.
