Through colour and art, Rosalie Sanda (below) has found herself. The visual artist of Congolese and Ethiopian descent, last week hosted family, friends and art lovers to her first ever art exhibition in Uganda.

The one-month exhibition currently showing at the Sheraton Kampala hotel, depicts a wide range of works done in acrylic paint. Born in Ethiopia and schooled in different countries in Europe and Africa, Sanda’s work has been influenced by her multicultural upbringing.

She uses her art as a medium of expression and a tool of identification with her African roots. Using abstract images, Sanda employs a rich colour scheme and African artifacts such as jewellery to portray her strong attachment to her African culture.

Her active and rich palate wrought with reds, yellows and black, evokes a nostalgic feeling on one hand as well as relief and confusion on the other. Her realistic images of African women and children betray the African woman in Sanda.
