FIFTEEN Sabiny traditional ‘surgeons’ have asked the United Nations to give them a retirement package so that they concentrate on the campaign against female circumcision.
The surgeons told the assistant representative of the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), Henry Kalule, that although the practice was a human-rights violation, efforts to end it had failed because it was a source of income for some people.
They were attending a UN-funded workshop at Greenfields Resort in Kapchorwa town.
The surgeons warned that unless the UN provided a special package under the Reproductive, Educative and Community Health (REACH) project, the practice was bound to continue.
“While we do agree to end this bloody practice, the UN and government should mobilise for us a retirement package to enable us start income-generating projects,” said Kokop Kamwandil from Kabei sub-county.
However, she did not specify what the package should include.
“The UN must realise that it has taken them very many years and millions of cash in trying to stop this practice without any success,” she added.
Judith Kokop said, “The little money the UN has budgeted for its campaign against this practice this year should be channelled for us through the REACH project.”
