MTN has unveiled a sh160m sponsorship package for the Uganda golf Open and East Africa Challenge.

The package includes sh8.7m prize money for professionals in the Uganda Open.
The Uganda Open is due October 20-23 at the Kitante course. The East Africa Challenge is set for October 25-28 at the same course.

MTN chief operations officer Serame Taukobong announced the package yesterday. “This is the start of what would be a long marriage with the golf fraternity,” Taukobong said.

Uganda Golf Union (UGU) president Jim Muhwezi saluted the telecommunications giants for supporting the high profile events.

“MTN has never supported us in such a manner. Their gesture this time re-affirms their commitment to golf,” Muhwezi said.

MTN takes over sponsorship of the Open from Alam Group of Companies.
Muhwezi revealed Kampala will also host the All Africa Challenge next year.

Officials of Royal and Ancient Club in Scotland, the world body in charge of amateur golf, are coming to observe how the Uganda Open and East Africa Challenge are organised.

“The officials will be analysing our ability to host the All Africa Challenge,” Muhwezi said.

National champion Charles Yokwe, son of golf legend Sadi Onito, leads Uganda’s campaign at the two events.
