THE Broadcasting Council has ordered the Central Broadcasting Services (CBS) FM Radio to install pre-listening facilities to censor live talk-shows.

A letter from the council secretary, Dr. Okullu Mura, to the CBS general manager yesterday said the system should be installed within 30 days.

Mura said this would ensure that “such tone of language is checked before airing it to the public.”
“The council will not hesitate to withdraw your licence if the violent and inciting nature of some of your programmes continue,” the letter said.

The CBS general manager, Michael Kawooya, Mwebe yesterday said the station would abide by the order.

“We always abide by regulations,” he said, adding that they would install a new digital pre-listening facility.

Mwebe, however, said the station was broadcasting according to the guidelines set by the Broadcasting Council and had always reprimanded any contributors who went astray.
He said the station always made disclaimers whenever verbal attacks were aired on the radio and it asked people to apologise.

The council operations manager, Dennis Lukaaya, urged radio stations to control the material they aired.

He said people got emotional on air while debating issues like federalism.
Lukaaya advised people who are invited to talk shows to control their temper.

“You could be angry but you need to be calm and not utter anything on radio,” he said.
