SIR— I have read your story in The New Vision concerning the despicable hooliganism by students at Nabumali High School yesterday. What a shame! What has become of our students?

Where is the responsibility, maturity, sense of reason and perspective that you would expect in our high schools?
For many of us who hail from Mbale and now live in other countries, Nabumali has always been our pride and beacon of excellence that has defined many generations of Ugandan leaders.

We see Nabumali as an example of what an education centre should be. To read that students ransacked and burnt the headmaster’s office and other buildings, destroying long-held records, burning food and medicines, and all this over dilute tea, is a shame! They have to learn that you destroy property, you go to jail, whatever your age, and other lessons.

We want our schools to produce reasonable, responsible, reflective students who have good judgement, justice, concern for others and perspective.
