SIR— Thanks to The New Vision for publishing my complaint/protest to God which presented a different, almost contrary perspective, to that of my friend Rev Francis Aseete’s praise of God for not abandoning Uganda since Independence, and the responses.

I was banging on God’s door, trying to wake him up as in Isaiah 51:9, “Awake, awake! Clothe yourself with strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in days gone by, as in generations of old.”
God’s being with us receives a lot of mention in the Bible. See Psalm 139. There is talk of God’s omnipresence, but the Bible also talks of God being remote and hidden (Job 13: 24).

The Rev Stephen Achillah comes very close to observing this paradox in the letter, “Both Aseete and Kasibante are right!” which ran Monday. However, I do not think his image of the glass that is “half full” and “half-empty” does justice to the paradox.

Thus, he records both Moses’ praise and complaint to God, but does not engage with the Cry of Dereliction by Jesus himself: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Still, Achillah portrays a depth of faith that contrasts sharply with much of the American-type prosperity gospel that is fashionable these days in Uganda.
