THE computerised driving permits the ministry of works and transport intends to introduce to curb forgeries of driving permits will cost the Government US$6.9m.

Appearing before the parliamentary committee on finance and planning yesterday, the transport state minister, Andruale Awuzu, said a South African-based company, Face technology, had been contracted to print the permits.

He, however, did not reveal when the permits would be issued.

Under the new arrangement, all public service vehicles are to be re-certified because many of the certificates of competence in the Uganda Revenue Authority were forged.
The minister said about 300 of every 1,000 permits were forged.

Awuzu, however, faced opposition from committee chairman Maj. Bright Rwamirama, who said the $6.9m was a high figure which could impact on the taxpayers’ money and the revenue collection.

the director of transport, G. Kibuuka, said 90% of the money would secure a data bank which could not be easily accessed by those who wanted to forge permits.
