THE Committee on Fast Tracking East African Federation has invited the public to submit memoranda on issues leading to the establishment of a political federation of the three East African States.

The treaty for the establishment of the EAC provides the stages in the development of the EA regional integration as a customs union, the entry point of the community, a common market, a monetary union and a political federation.

A website, www.eac.int/fasttrack, has been set up to update the public on the activities of the committee.

A statement from the EAC headquarters in Arusha yesterday said views and inquiries may be sent to the committee secretary by e-mail to fasttrack@eachq.org.

“Written memoranda, incorporating views, proposals on the following issues, but not limited to them, should be submitted to the committee: organisation of the federation, including functions, structure (institutional framework) and revenue, taxation and allocation of resources,” the statement said.

Other issues that should be submitted include elements in fast tracking the federation: customs union, common market, monetary union, foreign policy, defence and security and East African identity.

Memoranda on the time frame for establishment of the federation, benefits of the federation, including social, economic and political, should also be submitted to the website.

The Fast Tracking committee is headed by Amos Wako, the Kenyan Attorney General.
