AND so the splendid Miracle Centre Cathedral (MCC) was officially handed over to God. After seven years of toiling to build a cathedral for God, the high-octane celebrations, which highlighted its dedication and grand opening on Sunday were only befitting. The different choirs, adorned in elegant black and white, golden and yellow buggy and fitting outfits ranging from jeans, suits and dresses performed at the grand stage decorated with yellow, red and white flowers.
MCC record congregation of over 15,000 Christians, who gathered in and outside the 10,500-seater cathedral to witness the spiritual event, danced, chanted and shouted along the choirs, proclaiming God’s holy name and exalting His greatness.
Just as the pomp and high celebration, which reigned during King Solomon’s dedication of the Temple to God, the dedication of MCC was a day of praise interspersed with speeches, testimonies and prayers for the cathedral.
American gospel luminary and Hosanna leading praise and worship artiste, Byron Cage’s vocal gymnastics and high energy spiralled the congregation to spiritual heights. Everyone unanimously joined him in singing the song Spirit of the Lord is Here.
In an already created divine atmosphere controlled by sound, Phil Driscoll, one of the world’s greatest trumpeters, performed three worship songs.
The congregation were ruffled in awe when he raised his tuneful voice in praise. When he intensely played the trumpet, the prickly sound soared high and above the cathedral, compelling everyone to spring up and shout in praise and admiration. His legendary trumpet resonance and vocal superiority got encrypted in the cathedral and the congregation. One of the songs, Holy Holy, which was also a dedication to Janet Museveni, anchored in her soul and she choked on her tears. She often drew her glasses to wipe a tear with a white handkerchief. “I have watched many nations praise God and I admired them. I prayed to God to make Uganda a family of change. I prayed for what seemed impossible. I have prayed for so long,” she said. “But today, when I entered this church and saw this great number of people gathered here, I knew this is not just a Miracle Centre family, but the Uganda family I had prayed for. I thank God that I am alive in this country at this time,” an emotional Janet Museveni, who also launched Miracle Life Magazine, said.
As part of the Nakato Fund, Pastor Robert Kayanja and his family offered the first Lady a cheque worth sh25m to facilitate Uganda Womens’ Effort to Save Orphans. Nakato, one of Kayanja’s two daughters, was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which had spread through her spine. The doctors had given her three months to live.
Pastor Kayanja had promised God if He healed his daughter, he would help disadvantaged children in the country. Through prayer and the doctor’s help, she healed. “We appreciate your efforts to save our children,” Kayanja said while handing over the cheque.
The breathless choreography of the vibrant Miracle Teens and other choirs impressed President Yoweri Museveni, who expressed gratitude for the way Pastor Kayanja has succeeded in attracting the youth from evil to the church. “God has given you a vision to preach in a way packaged for the young generation. This is a big contribution. Instead of them going for kimansulo, they will come here. I am happy because these children have diverted from kimansulo and Satan’s word to the word of God. They are now singing God’s songs in the Beatle’s style,” said Museveni, whose speech was filled with Biblical quotations.
The cutting of a cake, designed like the cathedral, by the president and his wife, marked the peak of the morning session, which ended with a heavy down-pour, a symbol of blessings.
Just as Driscoll said “praise is the ultimate sign and sound of victory”, the music and dance which continued until late in the evening, was a sign of triumph over the huddles, which prevailed during the construction of the cathedral.
It was also a joyous sound to dedicate it to God.
