MUKONO — The LC1 chief of Ngove village in Goma sub-county, Sammy Kamya, is among the six residents ordered by Police to reconstruct a witchdoctor’s shrine which they destroyed after accusing him of bewitching them. Led by Kamya, residents recently stormed the home of a 90-year old man, Hakamada Lubwama, and demolished his shrine and house.

LC5 blames elite class
SEMBABULE — The district chairman, Herman Ssentongo, has blamed the low rate of development in the district on its educated people who are unwilling to work there. Addressing a graduation ceremony at Bukukula in Mawogola county recently, Ssentongo said outsiders working in the district had disorganised it. He urged graduates to search for jobs in their home districts.

City official’s office smells
KAMPALA — The office of the deputy mayor, Haji Hasib Takuba, is surrounded by a stench from the nearby prison cell. A source said the cell was always congested with prisoners pending trial. A prison warder on Friday said the cell, which accommodated only male inmates, lacked toilets.

Defiler serves nine months
MASAKA — The High Court has sentenced a taxi driver to nine months for defiling a 15-year old girl. She conceived and gave birth. Kasozi of Buwunga trading centre pleaded guilty. He committed the offence on March 26, 2001. Kasozi was also accused of child neglect. He had cohabited with the girl for over a year when he fell out with her parents, who contacted the Police.

Man jailed 10 years
MUKONO — High Court judge Vincent Kagaba on Thursday sentenced a 49-year old man to 10 years for defiling a 10-year old girl. Yorokam Lwekungu of Kisenyi village in Goma sub-county committed the offence on July 21, 2001. Lwekungu pleaded guilty.
