THE Uganda national women cricket squad has intensified drills ahead of the East Africa women tournament scheduled for December 11-22 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) summoned a squad of 22 women last week to start training under the newly appointed coach Martin Muyomba.

The women meet daily at Lugogo and Kyambogo ovals and have their trial matches over the weekends while visiting various secondary schools around Kampala.

“All the players are showing quick recovery after a long spell of not playing cricket. They are doing well in trial matches and we hope for the best in the East Africa meet,” a confident Muyomba said.

The squad that has toured Ndejje SSS, Masaka SSS and Kings College Budo, travels to Jinja this weekend to play against a schools select side from the area.

The final 13 players to play in the regional tournament would be selected next month after the annual British Council sponsored girls’ tournament that start November 26 to December 2.

Kenya Girls High School is expected to participate in the tournament as a guest side along side local schools like defending champions Gayaza High School, Ndejje SSS, Masaka SSS and Kings College Budo among others.

Meanwhile, UCA will also present a team for the East Africa U-19 championships slated for December 11-22 in Nairobi.

The squad to be handled by newly appointed coach Andrew Meya is yet to be named because most of the players are currently in school preparing for their final year examinations.
