THE manufacturing sector has posted positive growth in the third quarter of the year, though a strong shilling and increase in power rationing threatens to wipe out all the gains, a Uganda Manufacturers Association performance indicators report has shown.

The report for July to September said all items index of major manufacturing rose by 5.5%.
“Averages for July/August 2004 indicate that sectoral performance was varied with strong performance in sugar, cement, laundry soap and metal products where output increased by 19.7%, 10.5%, 22% and 15.6% respectively relative to the second quarter of the year,” said the report.

The report says textiles’ output increased by 5.8%, while edible oils’ output rose by 1.4%.
However, beer, soft drinks and cigarettes performed poorly.
