Writing in the Joy of Cooking,” the authors, Irma Rombauer and Marion Rombauer Becker say this about bread. “Once upon a time, when the English language was young, the word, from which the modern English ‘lady’ sprang, meant ‘loaf-kneader.’”

“The verb ‘to knead’ has even prehistoric origins! To our own and families’ distinct profit – and with little effort – we, housewives can become “ladies” again.”

Sadly, gone are the days when mothers would spend time in the kitchen churning out the wholesome and tasty bread for their fold.

Indeed, it is a rare and well-travelled Ugandan, who has a propensity for salted bread. The majority hanker for the sweet variant.

By the way, believe it or not, there are joints in town that serve savoury sandwiches with sweet bread. Ugh! Unfortunately, despite their being so many bakeries in town, the quality of bread available remains extremely substandard and largely inedible with the exception being the whole wheat bread Vasili’s Bakery produces. I remember growing up in London years ago, when we used to buy Hovis bread, an outstanding product.

For those of you, who share my taste and sentiment on bread, take heart, for Vasili’s salted bread is in a class of its own with no other bakery even coming a close third or fourth.

Besides having good bread, they do very well with their pastry.

They offer a wide range from plain croissants to a decent apple and Danish, not to mention their selection of Quiche, a delightful custard base number that more often than not receives short shrift in many a joint I know.

While you are there, make sure you check out their cakes, though the Black Forest seems to be a hit and miss affair. Still, their Swiss rolls generally are up to snuff.

The English breakfast is a favourite for many and comes replete with a glass of fresh juice, a couple of eggs on sausage, ham, bacon, toast and either tea or coffee. On the whole the standards at Vasili’s Bakery are high and offer a wide variety of items, while their prices are good for the course.
