Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) supporter Major Edward rurangaranga has vowed to support President Yoweri Museveni to get a third term in office if he frees former internal affairs minister Chris Rwakasisi.
Rurangaranga said in an interview at his home in Ishaka, Bushenyi district, on Tuesday that releasing Rwakasisi was not only in the interest of UPC but the Ankole region as well.
“President Museveni must remember that Rwakasisi was his associate in the UPC youth wing in the 1960s and these were our strong youth leaders then,” he said.
Rwakasisi, who is on death row in Luzira Prison, was recently transferred from the condemned section to the general section, Boma.
Justice Ignatius Mukanza sentenced the Obote II minister to death for murder in 1998.
“Rwakasisi has served enough of his punishment in prison. It is now worth releasing him so that he can take care of his parents, relatives and his family,” Rurangaranga said.
He added, “If Museveni granted amnesty to the Allied Defence Forces and the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels, why doesn’t he pardon Rwakasisi?”
