PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni yesterday mourned Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leader, reports Hillary Kiirya.
“I have leant with profound sadness of the death of President Yasser Arafat, which occurred yesterday at the Percey Military Hospital in Paris, France. Yasser Arafat has been known as a symbol and embodiment of the struggle of the liberation of the Palestinian people.
“I salute him for his dedication to the struggle to free his people to regain their right to statehood and self-determination,” Museveni said in a message to the acting President of the Palestinian Authority, Rawhi Fatohi.
He added, “on behalf of the government and people of Uganda, I convey to you and to the Palestine people and in particular the bereaved family, our heartfelt condolences and sympathy.
“I take this opportunity to re-affirm our support for the right of the Palestinian people to statehood. May the Almighty God rest his soul in peace, give solace to his family and hope to the Palestinian people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mariam Nalunkuuma reports that all mosques are to conduct prayers for Arafat today, the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, directed yesterday.
In a statement, Mubajje also sent condolences to Palestinians.
“As Muslims it is our responsibility to pray for our brother so that Allah rewards him for his struggle to have peace in his country,” he said.
He will lead the national prayers at Old Kampala. Other officials urged Palestinians to elect a leader like Arafat, a freedom and peace fighter.
