A $65m partnership between Uganda Beef Processors Association (UBPA) and a Kenyan firm, will promote beef exportation, UBPA’s executive officer, Stanley Wareba, has said.

In an interview recently, Wareba said the partnership with Critical Mass Group, a beef exporting firm, would promote production in disease-free areas.

“We signed an agreement to export beef to European, US, African and Arab markets.

For the project to succeed in the next five years, it will require over $65m, which the Kenyan firm is largely mobilising,” he said at UBPA’s head office in Kampala.

According to the agreement, UBPA and Critical Mass will develop Senko Livestock Farm in Mukono. The farm was previously owned by the Government, who will retain 51%.

Wareba said the farm is six square miles and has over 100 cattle and about 100 goats. He said they would rear more animals next year after re-stocking.

Wareba said Critical Mass would invest in an abattoir, processing and packaging machines.

He said UBPA would identify viable areas for animal rearing and sensitise farmers about quantity and quality.

“We are working with the health and agriculture ministries, Makerere University’s veterinary department and research organisations to gazette disease-free districts. We want to ensure that all animals, which leave those areas are checked. We shall also put there big farms,” Wareba said.
