Did you know that the Crowned Crane is the one found on the emblem of Uganda?
There are 16 different species of the Crested Crane and four of these are found in Africa. But the Crowned Crane was chosen as the the national symbol because of its unusual beauty and grace that represented the country and its people so well.

It is a tall bird standing well over three feet on long, slender black legs. Its neck is almost as long as its legs and towards the base pointed pearl-grey feathers are elongated to form an ornamental fringe. This explains why we really need to preserve the Crested Crane. It is so beautiful and it is a source of revenue. Tourists will come in to watch the grace and beauty of this special bird.

Nature Uganda, The New Vision, the Wildlife Conservation Society and Wildlife Clubs of Uganda have come together in a drive to save the Cranes. A competition is going on for 10 weeks. You will need to get the questionnaire that appears
in The New Vision twice a week.

This questionnaire asks you to state where you have seen the Crested Crane and especially the nests. Some children have already filled in and sent their questionnaires. Thank you so much you automatically enter the draw! You are asked to fill in this information and send the questionnaire to any New Vision Agent or office in your area or to the Wildlife Conservation Society on P. O. Box 7487, Kampala, Uganda.

Send Children’s Vision some nice poems and songs on the Crested Crane. The songs can be either in your mother tongue or in English. Published songs and poems will win instant prizes. But please ensure you fill in the questionnaire and send it in.
