KAMPALA International University (KIU) yesterday had its first graduation ceremony at their Kansanga campus.

A total of 686 students graduated.
The ceremony also involved the inauguration of the university’s officials, led by Chancellor Prof. George Kanyeihamba.

The First Deputy Prime Minister, Lt. Gen Moses Ali who was the guest of honour, presided over the inauguration.

Senior Government officials in attendance were local government minister Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, who is also the chairperson of the University Council, his deputy MP Mary Okurut, the chairperson of the board of trustees. The university proprietor, Hassan Basajjabalaba and his brother, MP Nasser Basajjabalaba, were also present.

The students graduated with degrees and diplomas in education, computer science, mass communication and other disciplines.

Hundreds of students from Kenya and Tanzania were among the graduands.

Basajjabalaba said the day was great in KIU’s history and the education sector. He said it was the “crowning of the glory of an idea that started as a dream.”
He said it had been a long journey with “roadblocks” but that they had been overcome.

KIU was involved in a prolonged wrangle with the National Council for Higher Education over licensing. The university started in 2001.

Basajjabalaba said KIU started as a commitment by the Basajjabalaba family to their forefathers’ legacy. He said his grandfather started Basajjabalaba PS, his father set up a secondary school and he had a university.
