Tea production more than doubled during September to 2,935,130 kilos against 1,254,886 kilos produced in August, the Uganda Tea Association (UTA) has said.
Exports also increased from 1,009,145 kilos to 1,602,692 kilos over the same period.
UTA’s executive secretary, Isaac Munaabi attributed the increase to improved weather.
Local sales also increased from 41,330 kilos in August to 102,096 kilos in September. Despite this increment, local tea consumption is still low because of competition with soft drinks.
“Less than 5% of the tea produced is consumed locally. Most people especially the youth prefer soft drinks to tea,” Munaabi said in an interview recently.
