FIRE gutted a Bugolobi flat belonging to Margaret Kajimba of the World Vision, destroying property.
The fire, which broke out on Block 1, Flat A6 at about 2:30pm on Thursday, lasted more than an hour. Officers from the Fire Brigade and Uganda Electricity Distribution company Limited put it out.
Assistant Inspector of Police Christopher Dramani, who led the Fire Brigade team, said, “It is hard at the moment to tell the cause of the fire. But we came in a record time after we received the call. We managed to save some parts of the flat including two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen,” he said.
He said the fire could have originated from the children’s room.
Dramani attributed fire outbreaks in houses to carelessness and ignorance about the dangers of fire.
“The trend is high because most people do not take keen interest in fire prevention. We need to be conscious about the dangers of fire and put in place basic measures to halt them when they occur.
“For instance, electrical appliances should be switched off whenever they are not in use,” he said.
Dramani advised families to buy fire extinguishers.
He also warned against keeping flammables like petrol in the house.
Dramani said children should be told about the dangers of fires.
